Sixth Form Debaters Shine in National Competition

Students from The Stockwood Park Academy Sixth Form impressed judges with their confidence, clarity and teamwork as they competed in Round Two of the prestigious ESU Schools’ Mace debating competition.

The event, held on 20 January at Redborne Upper School, brought together talented young debaters from across the region. Representing the Academy, the team took on the challenging motion: “This House Would hold tech companies legally responsible for the mental health impact of their platforms”, arguing the opposition case with maturity and conviction.

The judges praised the team’s performance, highlighting the individual strengths of each speaker.

Emmanuela Mendes (Year 12), opening the debate, was commended for her presence and clarity. Judges noted she was “very loud, clear, and had a command of the room easily,” adding that her use of relevant examples and her “very clear-cut way of explaining [her] point” were key strengths.

Frankie Castleman (Year 13), speaking second, was recognised for a well-organised and confident delivery. Feedback described the speech as “very structured” with “excellent signposting throughout,” while strong body language and effective gestures helped drive key arguments home.

Summary speaker Sajida Khanom (Year 12) rounded off the team’s case with a persuasive and composed performance. Judges praised her “very loud and clear voice” and her ability to “summarise all the relevant points” while effectively persuading the panel.

The team was supported by a large group of fellow sixth form students, whose enthusiastic encouragement added to the atmosphere of the event. For many in the audience, it was also a valuable opportunity to experience high-level ESU debating first-hand, strengthening the sense of community and reflecting the academy’s core values of Excellence, Responsibility and Compassion.

Staff said they were incredibly proud of the students’ achievements and the way they represented The Stockwood Park Academy. With such a strong showing in a national competition, this marks an exciting step forward for the academy’s Debate Society, one that is quickly establishing itself as a name to watch in the debating world.
