Stockwood Debate Society- A Proud Moment — Luton Youth Awards

Last night was a truly special evening and one I will not forget in a hurry.

I had the honour of attending the Luton Youth Awards alongside my wonderful colleagues Mrs. Opuni-Kwagyan, Mrs. Akhtar, and Ms. Thompson, to cheer on some incredible young people, including several of our very own Stockwood Park Academy students and alumni who were nominated on the night.

Seeing so many of our young people recognised for their contributions to the community was a reminder of just how much talent, heart, and ambition exists within our school and beyond.

But I must give a very special mention to Frankie Castleman, a sixth form student and dedicated member of the Stockwood Debate Society, who won the Community Champion Award, celebrating young people who go above and beyond to support their community.

Having nominated Frankie, hearing the words used to describe her called out on the night left me incredibly proud.

I have known Frankie for well over a year, and throughout that time I have witnessed her grow into a compassionate, driven, and thoughtful young person. More recently, I have had the privilege of mentoring her and supporting her in a new and exciting student-led homelessness initiative, a project that is very much ongoing and building momentum. Driven entirely by Frankie’s compassion and determination, the initiative is being developed in partnership with local Luton and Bedfordshire-based organisations, with the goal of creating and distributing care packages for people experiencing homelessness in our community. Frankie has already made a significant impact through the thoughtful newsletters and communications she has crafted, inspiring students, staff, and families to get involved and take action. Watch this space: there is much more to come.

And the journey does not stop there! Frankie now has the exciting opportunity to become a Youth Ambassador.

What I have come to believe deeply as an educator is this: when a young person is believed in and empowered through opportunity, you create the conditions for them to believe in themselves. That is when the real magic happens.

At The Stockwood Park Academy, our vision is “to strive for excellence and contribute to society” and last night, Frankie embodied every word of that. I am grateful that Stockwood Park Academy is the place where the Debate Society has been able to take root and grow into a platform that gives students like Frankie the space, the voice, and the confidence to lead.

To every teacher and mentor quietly championing their students behind the scenes - keep going. It matters more than you know.

Congratulations also to all the other incredible young people nominated and recognised at the Luton Youth Awards: you are all making your communities a better place.
