The Stockwood Park Academy Celebrates St George’s Day
On Thursday, 23rd April, our school community gathered to celebrate St George’s Day.
St George was actually a soldier born in what is now modern-day Turkey, who grew up in the Middle East, and never visited England. He was chosen as England’s patron saint not because of where he was from, but because of the values he represented: courage, standing up for what is right, and protecting the vulnerable. St George is the patron saint of many countries around the world, and his story transcends borders and beliefs.
Staff wore red and white as a symbol of a shared sense of our community. The day also featured a sale of traditional English cakes and sweets, such as assorted bonbons, at break and lunch. Students enjoyed a variety of themed activities, including arts and crafts and lunchtime clay dragon-making and painting, as well as tutor time discussions about heritage, identity, and belonging.
We were especially honoured to welcome local pensioners, whose presence reminded us that our school is more than a place of learning - it is a community built on connection.
Our school values - Excellence, Responsibility, and Compassion - were at the heart of the day’s celebrations. Thank you to everyone who wore red and white, supported the cake sale, or simply embraced the spirit of the day.
Together, we showed that the true meaning of St George’s Day is not just about tradition, but a reflection of individuals like St George who stood up for what is right and embodied the values we strive for in our own community.
